Competitive Programs Overview

Our Competitive Programs pathway helps players grow through each stage of the game, from their first team-based experiences to advanced competition and college preparation.

Each phase is designed for the player’s age and level, with training and expectations that build over time. From U8–U10 Surf Academy through U15–U19, players are challenged in a supportive environment that helps them develop confidence, skills, and a love for the game.

U8-U10 Surf Academy (7v7)

During these key developmental years, the focus is on building a strong technical foundation while introducing players to the game within a team environment. Players develop confidence on the ball through repetition and guided play, while gradually learning how to apply their skills in game situations.

As they progress, we introduce 1v1 attacking and defending, along with early positional understanding within a team system. Core principles of play – possession, defending, and transition – are introduced to prepare players for the move to 9v9 at the next stage.

  • Training two days per week
  • Fall and Spring league play through NorCal Premier Soccer
  • State Cup participation (U9–U10)
  • Tournaments/Play Dates chosen by Coach and approved by Director of Coaching
  • U9 Introduction to Surf Select Program (NorCal and National)

U11-U12 Competitive Phase I (9v9)

In this phase, players continue to refine technical skills while developing a deeper understanding of team play. Emphasis is placed on possession, attacking patterns, defending as a unit, and managing transition moments.

Coaches also begin to support players’ social and psychological development as part of a competitive team environment. Age-appropriate fitness and soccer-specific conditioning are introduced through training, camps, and clinics.

During the U12 year, players are gradually prepared for the transition to 11v11 through “playing up” opportunities in select events and scrimmages.

  • Fall and Spring league play
  • State Cup participation (Non Pre-ECNL and Non Pre-ECNL RL teams)

U13-U14 Competitive Phase II (11v11)

With the transition to the full-sided game, players learn to apply technical skills and tactical understanding within a larger, more complex environment. Training focuses on decision-making and execution across the four key moments of the game: attacking, defending, and transitions when possession is won or lost.

Coaches continue to develop the whole player – balancing technical, tactical, physical, and psychological growth – to prepare them for higher levels of competition.
