My Soccer Life

I started playing soccer for Folsom Soccer Club when I was 4 years old. The first time I stepped onto the field, I stood in one spot with my arms crossed saying “I’m not going to play this game.” My mom had to come out in the field and tell me had to play this one game and if I didn’t like it, I didn’t have to play ever again. Well, obviously I had fun scoring goals and chasing kids down to keep them from scoring. 🙂

I went on to play competitive soccer and fell in love with the game. It is all I wanted to do. I committed most of my time to becoming the best soccer player I could be and went on to play for the ODP district and state team at the age of 14. Traveling with the ODP state team to Wyoming for regional camp was both exciting and nerve-racking. The first week regional team evaluators watched as we played against the other states in our region. The last day of camp, we were told we would get a phone call with an offer to stay for the next week to be part of the regional pool. If you did not get a call you would be going home. I was so nervous as waited in my dorm room. I got the call! I was going to stay another week and get the chance to be evaluated by the National Team coaches. After returning home, I attended camps in Minnesota and Florida as well as traveling to Germany with the regional team. It was after the camp in Florida that I received a call that I would be getting a plane ticket and Nike gear in the mail. I had officially been asked to be part of the U15 national pool. This is truly the moment I knew what I wanted. I wanted to go as far as I could with the National program and play Division 1 soccer on a full ride scholarship.

The U15 national pool trained but really didn’t play in any games. I was so shocked and excited that I got invited to play against Australia with the U16 National Team in Chula Vista. During this time, I trained hard, I did extra trainings and fully committed myself to be the best I can be.

One very big memory I have was not making a team but being told I just missed the cut. The following year, I was now 15 years old and though I was still part of the U16 national pool training in Chula Vista, I got the devastating news that I did not make the travel team for the next event. I remember being so nervous at that week long camp but felt good. I was fit, strong and confident. I was shocked and heart broken. I went home and I will never forget what my mom said on the car ride home from the airport, “You obviously didn’t stand out, keep working hard and go back to camp and prove them wrong.”

I continued to work hard and put in the effort and by the time I was invited back to the National Camp in Chula Vista, I was ready. After weeks of camp, I went on to make the U18 National Team and traveled to Bulgaria to compete against other nations. It was unbelievable and so rewarding after all my hard work. I will never forget that experience. I also reached my goal to play Division 1 soccer, receiving a full ride scholarship to The University of Texas.

Now coaching youth soccer is my passion. I do it because I love inspiring kids to work hard and love the game.

I believe if you have the right coach that not only teaches the skills you need but motivates you and challenges you, that you will become the best soccer player you can be. You not only learn to work hard every time you step on the field, you learn to love the game.

I believe you have to become a good individual soccer player first. I focus on individual skills every practice with lots of repetition.

“The more you practice, the better you get.”

I teach my players that competing is important. You have to “want” to win. If you don’t win and you gave all that you had out on the field, I am a happy coach.

“You only get out of it what you put into it”.
