Folsom Lake Surf Newsletter | January 2021

Message from Fritz

Dear members,
Believe it or not, it is time to start planning for next season. While we will continue to focus our efforts on making the rest of this season as great as possible for our players, we are hoping for a brighter Spring and a smooth transition into next season.

At the start of last season, with our new affiliation to Surf Sports in hand we were excited about rolling out all of the unique programming and playing opportunities it comes with. A year later, these programs are more developed and our Surf network has grown in size and in the scope of what it can offer our players; in particular the formation of a Norcal Surf organization that will bring together the very best players from Surf Clubs in our region for high level play in top national and even international events.

Further, more of our teams are qualifying for play in the National Premier League (NPL) and our acceptance into United Futsal‘s Championship Cup Series will offer players other options to participate in high quality national and international events.

From a club services perspective, we have launched “Surf Talks”, which focuses on providing our players with access to “soccer people” doing great things around the country including college coaches who can give further guidance to our college bound players.

Lastly, as many of you may know, Surf isn’t just a stand alone club. It is part of a 4500 member and growing, league of clubs that includes recreation programs from Folsom, Rancho Cordova and Orangevale. One of our primary focuses heading into next season is to formalize our development path (details below) for each player playing within this league - especially on helping our youngest players make a jump from rec to comp soccer and on assisting our oldest players to find what comes next in their lifelong soccer journey.

For Next Season

For existing Surf players - in the coming months, coaches will start speaking with you about how to prepare for next season and how tryouts or placements will be handled.

For players coming from one of our league’s rec programs - you may contact Surf at anytime and express interest in the program and even join a team at anytime should a coach be interested in having you join. Please express interest by following this link and providing your details and someone will contact you.

For players currently playing for another competitive club - as per NorCal Premier Soccer rules concerning player recruitment, a player can contact Surf expressing interest in the program. A representative or head coach from Surf is permitted to respond the the purpose of answering general questions about the program and his/her team. It is strictly prohibited to discuss actual interest or placement of a player before the tryout/placement window opens in the Spring. Please express interest by following this link and providing your details and someone will contact you.

Folsom Lake Surf Scholar Athlete Program

United Futsal Champions Cup Series
Calling all Folsom Lake Surf Scholar Athletes:  the first term of the 2020-2021 school year has ended and the club would like to recognize our players in grades 6-12 who have excelled academically.  The purpose of the program is to acknowledge the hard work of our soccer players in school with a reward for keeping up their grades while participating in soccer.  The scholar athlete program is not a scholarship program.  All qualifying athletes will be recognized in a ceremony (dependent on current COVID-19 protocols), a certificate, and a small personal memento.  For high school students, the program is also an achievement that can be attached to a college application.
To qualify, the player must have achieved a 3.5 GPA / B+ average or higher.
Please send the following information by February 12th to:  scholar.athlete@folsomlakesoccerleague.org:

Learn the Basic Rules of the Game

Advantage!

Probably the most misunderstood part of the game is the advantage rule. How many times have I heard a parent on the sideline screaming about a penalty and telling the referee that they are blind?
One of the weirdest experiences with this rule that I personally experienced was when a dad was ejected from his son’s game after insisting the referee should have awarded a penalty kick to his team. A player was tackled from behind inside the penalty box - a clear foul, but the ball rolled to another player who shot the ball and scored. The parent actually wanted the penalty kick awarded even though the
team scored seconds after the foul was committed. He berated the referee and was ejected. I responded by asking the dad to research the rule and email me his understanding of the rule before the Club allowed him back on the sideline.

Surf Talk with Matt Sheldon

Surf Talk with Matt Sheldon
In our first in a series we call Surf Talks, we will have Matt Shedon founder of Become Elite talk to our club about what it took to get to UC Davis and then to pros. Matt is a great resource to coaches and players a like. He runs a great youtube channel as well, and I know many of our players follow him religiously. Will be a great discussion for our club!
Date, time and Zoom info will be sent out to club members soon - targeting end of February.
